Mushroom Cultivation on Logs 101

May 24 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Free

Join farm manager Charlotte Hughes to learn how to cultivate edible mushrooms on logs, from log selection to mushroom harvest. This workshop will include a tour of our laying yard in the forest, hands-on practice on inoculating logs with sawdust spawn, and handouts to take home. The class is free, but there will be opportunities to purchase finished logs in small quantities at $20 each if you want to take any home to start your mushroom growing journey!

We will be discussing Shiitake and Oyster mushroom production specifically, but the same cultivation techniques can be applied to a range of wood loving mushrooms for outdoor cultivation. It’s an exciting opportunity to explore a new skill and gain hands-on experience in mushroom cultivation. The workshop will be in the barn and outdoors so please be prepared for seasonal weather, including bringing your preferred footwear for muddy areas and bug protection of your choice.

In this class we will:

  • Learn about wood log selection for growing diverse groups of fungi outdoors
  • Learn inoculation procedures, try out different tool styles
  • Take a tour of a laying yard, learn about yard selection based on permaculture principles

This is a free class made possible by the Finland Food Chain, North Shore AgroEcology Center, and a generous grant from the Laura Jane Musser Foundation.

*If you are having issues with online registration, please email farmmanager@organicconsumers.org to register.
